L1 - Independent Movement on Ice

- stand up / get up off the ice with out assistance

- glide with two feet on ice (glide with out a stride at least 7 m, knees not touching, knees bent, head up)

- aware of the basic stance (always lean slightly forward - never back -, knees bent, head up, chest out)

- start and stop (be able to stop - without falling - within 1 m when 'signaled') (T stop, A stop)

- stride to side (kicks to the side, using the length of the blade to get 'power')

- hourglass movement basic (using both feet at same amount, glide out and in, without lifting skate off the ice)

- using both feet for strides (using both feet to gain speed)

- able to turn both ways

- basic backwards movement on ice (e.g. hourglass, two feet gliding)

- able to step over a stick on tires / obstacle on ice (25 cm tall)

- able to jump (both feet off ice) over an obstacle on ice (2 cm tall)

- able to cross step over a 2 cm obstacle on ice (from stationary)

- able to turn from forward skating to backward skating and back with stopping

Posture: secure, in balance

L2 - Basic Movement on Ice

- hockey turn both way (leading leg in front, pushing down, putting weight on it)

- glide on one foot (at least 10 m, knee bent, head up, no balance with hands)

- inside edge forward turns (one foot on ice)

- inside edge backwards turns (two foot on ice)

- hourglass movement refine (knees bent all the time - when bringing in the feet, head up, chest out)

- hourglass movement refined backwards (knees bent all the time - when bringing in the feet, head up, chest out)

- able to adjust, modify seed and tempo on ice (accelerate, slow down)

- sudden stops (stop within 0.5 m of signal) (T-stop, hockey stop)

- know difference between acceleration and speed maintenance (fast-short strides vs. long, powerful strides)

- able to use hands independently while skating / balancing

- able to lift knees high on one leg straight balancing

- able to step over with cross step a 25 cm tall obstacle on ice

- able to jump over a 25 cm tall obstacle on ice (both feet off ice)

- able to push forward, turn without lifting skates off ice

- able to turn from forward skating to backward skating and back - continuous motion.

- fine tuned L1 movement

Posture: head up, chest out, back straight

L3 - Smooth movement on ice

- able to perform basic cross-overs during skating - forwards and backwards (lifting one foot in front of the other while turning)

- hockey stops both ways (stop with in 20 cm on signal)

- able to perform sudden movement, direction changes

- D-turn

- Wingers turn

- outside edge forward

  • outside edge backward
  • inside edge backwards (one skate on ice)

- hourglass movement refined (feet touch, turn to outside edge and back to inside)

- able to perform basic 'open up' motion

- glide backward on one foot

- fine tuned L1, L2 movement

- manage inside and outside edges

- able perform a complex motion program (acceleration-long strides-sudden stop-accelerate-sudden stop to other side-balance-adjusting speed-edge control)

Posture: knees bent, head up, chest out, back straight
